Official travel advice and safety in Libya
According to official travel advice from the Netherlands, the US and Australia, do not travel to Libya. Reasons include armed conflicts, militias, kidnapping risks and abandoned mines. Anyone who puts safety first must take this information seriously. 

No go or maybe go anyway?
As a travel organizer, I officially advise you not to go off-roading in Libya. But as a human being I believe in autonomy, ownership and freedom. You could consider to make sure you are well informed and then make your own decision.

Off-road travel in Libya – what is possible?
Despite the negative advice and the serious dangers, off-road expeditions are being organized again since august 2024. A single tour company works with local experienced guides and officers from security services, satellite communications and 4x4 support trucks. Routes can be flexibly adapted to the current situation. The 10 times that this organisation was in Libia since august 2024 however this was never necessary.

The magic of the Libyan Sahara
Those who dare to take the step will discover unique landscapes:

• the endless Murzuk Desert (Sea of ​​Sand),
• the impressive Acacus rock formations,
• and the turquoise Awbari lakes in the middle of the dunes.

These places make Libya one of the most impressive destinations for 4x4 and enduro travel in North Africa.

FOR who is a 4x4 adventure in Libya suitable?
Or: who is suitable for Libya? A Libya desert expedition is not a standard holiday. It is a journey for experienced off-roaders who consciously weigh the risks and accept that life is not riskfree. You have known for a long time what an expedition entails. Consider extreme conditions, unpredictable routes and the need for strong preparation, even if you go with an organization.

Conclusion
Is off-road driving in Libya safe? Officially: no. Practically: sometimes, under strict conditions and with the right organization tours are done. Ultimately, everyone decides for themselves whether the reward, a unique and epic encounter with the Libyan Sahara, outweighs the risks.
