Libië 4wd – Waw el Namous and Murzuq This 4wd journey is a true expedition into the most remote heart of the Libyan Sahara: an off-road itinerary featuring long sections completely off-track, under the careful guidance and organization of a tour operator who has made history in desert travel, with a fully equipped 4×4 Unimog as support and as a recovery guarantee for vehicles that may unfortunately break down. In Brief Dates: 21/11/2026 to 08/12/2026 and 19/12/2026 to 05/01/2027 Participants: Minimum 10 Autonomy: 1,000 km on asphalt Duration: 18 days – 17 nights Difficulty level: Medium The Trip Once we reach the heart of the Fezzan, we will cross the dunes of Murzuq, one of the most spectacular seas of sand in the Sahara. Continuing south, the landscape becomes increasingly isolated and primordial, until we reach the final destination of the expedition: the Waw el Namous volcano, one of the most astonishing and mysterious places in the entire Sahara. This ancient, isolated volcano suddenly rises from the vastness of the Libyan desert like a black island in an ocean of sand, offering scenery of rare visual power. The volcanic complex is dominated by a large circular crater, inside which lie small volcanic lakes with dark waters, surrounded by ash and black sands. The chromatic contrast between the intense black of the basalt rocks, the pale yellow of the surrounding dunes, and the Saharan sky creates an almost unreal landscape, often described as “lunar.” The area is completely isolated and devoid of human settlements, and the absolute silence amplifies the feeling of being in a place outside of time. Walking along the crater rim or within the caldera means immersing yourself in a primordial environment, shaped by the forces of the Earth and unchanged for millennia. Waw el Namous represents the ideal highlight of a Saharan expedition: a remote and difficult-to-reach destination that rewards the effort with one of the most fascinating and least-known landscapes in North Africa. Nights will be spent in mobile desert camps, beneath star-filled skies of rare intensity, around the fire, immersed in an atmosphere of true exploration. A program designed as an expedition, where every day is an adventure and every kilometer tells the story of the power and extreme beauty of the Libyan Sahara. As always, it will be possible to join us with your own 4×4 vehicle, or simply as passengers in the organization’s vehicles, bringing only a backpack and sleeping bag. PROGRAM DAY 1 All participants meet at the departure port (Genoa or Palermo, as preferred), where our staff will provide the necessary assistance for check-in, document inspection and boarding. Accommodation in the reserved cabins. Dinner and overnight stay on board. DAY 2 During the crossing, a trip briefing will be held, during which we will provide all the useful information needed to face the following days in the Sahara. After completing customs procedures at the Port of Tunis, again with the assistance of our staff, we will begin the first highway transfer stage to reach Gabes. Dinner at your own expense along the way and overnight stay in a hotel. DAY 3 Early morning departure for the Ras Jadir border, meeting with the guide and completion of entry formalities, including the delivery of license plates. Transfer to Gharyan, overnight bivouac at a hostel (with the possibility of extra rooms). DAY 4 Asphalt transfer in the direction of Brak. Bivouac planned along the route. DAY 5 We will pass through Sebha and arrive in the afternoon in the town of Murzuk. We will have just enough time to refuel and stock up on food supplies for the coming days, then we will head toward the Idehan Murzuq, which awaits us with its dunes. FROM DAY 6 TO DAY 12 The heart of our expedition: reaching the volcano, also via the Murzuq dunes. DAY 13 From Brak we take the outbound asphalt road again to reach Gharyan, staying in the same hostel as on the way in. We will celebrate the New Year with a five-a-side football tournament. Overnight bivouac at the hostel (with the possibility of extra rooms). DAY 14 We head north again, towards Tripoli, arriving in the afternoon—just in time to take a look around this very beautiful city, where many streets in the center still bear Italian names. Dinner in the city and overnight stay in a hotel. DAY 15 We depart in the morning and head toward the border with Tunisia. We will stop to visit Sabratha, with its ancient Roman amphitheater, and after lunch we will continue toward the border. After customs formalities, we will enter Tunisia. We will head for Gabes and overnight at a campsite. Dinner at your own expense. DAY 16 We travel north to Hammamet. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel. DAY 17 Transfer to the Port of Tunis, arriving in the afternoon for boarding to Italy. DAY 18 Arrival at the Port of Genoa. Important note Given the nature of the itinerary, planned in “difficult” areas, there may also be significant changes to the program/route due to weather events, security issues, or permit revocations. In such cases, the Organisation will implement the necessary route changes in agreement with the local authorities, coordinating with them on any new itinerary, always prioritizing the participants’ safety.
